PINK XMAS: The Holiday Cheer of Japanese Sexploitation, in NYC

Two Weeks Only, FREE SCREENINGS!

Pink Eiga and GreenCine are excited to present a softcore sex-travaganza for the holidays with 6 of the wildest Japanese "pink films" in history. Pink films ("pinku eiga") are hour-long erotic indies—shot on 35mm, with high production values and artistry—which run the genre gamut from comedy to romantic drama, exploitation and horror. Rarely seen outside of Japan, these strange, shocking and sometimes touching stories push creative and cultural boundaries... while fulfilling the requisite number of sex scenes! Two of the films are by the Academy Award winning director of Departures. "PINK XMAS: The Holiday Cheer of Japanese Sexploitation" runs December 24 – January 6.

tsumugi.jpg

"They're usually the training ground for some great directors. Jazzy, snazzy and often totally, outrageously avant-garde, they ain't your garden variety pornos. In fact, they're some of the most head-spinningly wild movies you'll ever see, where making your brain bubble is the first priority and showing sex in a salacious manner is a distant second." - Grady Hendrix, VARIETY ASIA

  • *** COME EARLY FOR LIQUOR & SNACKS! Last call 5 minutes before showtime

The Kids Are All Right contest!

kidsareallright_poster.jpg The Kids Are All Right is the heartfelt new comedy from acclaimed director Lisa Cholodenko [interview], starring Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, and Mark Ruffalo. Two teenaged children (Alice in Wonderland's Mia Wasikowska and Journey to the Center of the Earth's Josh Hutcherson) get the notion to seek out their biological father and introduce him into the family life that their two mothers (Bening and Moore) have built for them. Once the donor (Ruffalo) is found, the household will never be the same, as family ties are defined, re-defined, and re-re-defined. The New York Times raves that it's "a generous, nearly note-perfect portrait of a modern family," and Entertainment Weekly calls the movie "funny, smart and sexy!" And now GreenCine and Focus Features have teamed up teaming up for a new contest with prizes that are more than all right.

One (1) lucky Grand Prize Winner will receive:

PHOTO CONTEST: Win the Henri-Cartier Bresson DVD + Prizes from Photojojo!

"As far as I'm concerned, taking photographs is a means of understanding which canonot be separated from other means of visual expression. It is a way of shouting, of freeing oneself, not of proving or asserting one's own originality. It is a way of life." - Henri Cartier-Bresson

This week, New Video Group releases the Collector's Edition of the Henri Cartier-Bresson DVD set, which includes a series of documentaries on the artist, five of his original works, and a booklet containing photographs, quotes, and essays on his life. In the spirit of this amalgamation of photography and cinema, we've teamed up with Photojojo to bring you our first photo contest! Photojojo is a candy store for photographers of sorts, with a really great newsletter devoted to sharing just about anything rad that's related to photography (photo tips, DIY projects, inspiration and more).

The contest is simple: take a photo inspired by a film. Send it to us at contest(at)greencine(dot)com and let us know what film you're referencing. We'll post our favorite photos here (along with your credit) and allow submissions to our Flickr pool once the contest has closed. 1 grand prize winner will receive, compliments of PhotoJojo, our favorite little gadget of late, the Digital Harinezumi 2.0,   which captures dreamy photos and Super-8 style video (check out stills and video), plus a copy of the Henri Cartier-Bresson DVD set.

One runner-up will receive the awesome magnetic photo rope, and the DVD. Please read below for rules and terms. We look forward to seeing your cinematic-inspired creations!

Rule and Terms: Deadline to enter is April 20, 2010. One photo submission allowed per entry.  Please keep digital manipulation to a minimum. Photos must be at least 600 pixels on the longest size, and no larger than 6MB. Accepted file formats are  JPG, GIF, TIF and PNG. By entering this competition, you grant GreenCine and its affiliates a non-exclusive licence to display your photograph in connection with this contest. Photographers will always be credited alongside their image (send us a link to your blog, website, or just your name for credit). This contest is open to submissions world-wide. Please include your name and shipping address with your entry.  Winners will be announced April 27, 2010 in future editions of the GreenCine Dispatch, and by email notification.

winning, ever-popular film blog GreenCine Daily, with our oft-quoted primers and interviews, and in our numerous DVD reviews. Baron Karl Friedrich von Münchhausen served in the Russian military and was involved in several battles, most notably against the Ottoman Empire, until he retired in 1750. On his return to his hometown of Bodenwerder, he told tales of visits to the Moon and flights across the battlefield atop a cannonball. While there have been many stories and illustrations about his legendary life, Czech filmmaker Karel Zeman mixed animation and live-action to create this exceptional little-seen film version of these fantastic tales. Not available on home video here in the U.S., this is your only chance to catch this most delightful film.

The next GreenCine-sponsored screening at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts will be on Wednesday, August 2, as we proudly present the San Francisco premiere of Interkosmos (2006, 71 min., 16mm, in English and German with English subtitles). These fabricated details are the grist for writer/director Jim Finn's first feature, an exceptional pseudo-documentary that chronicles the cosmonaut era from an alternate universe replete with musical numbers and faithful reconstructions of the rigors of space travel.

GreenCine Presents: Such a Pretty Little Beach at the Yerba Buena Center, 7/5

    x-unesijoliepetiteplag-jjv.jpg

Our next screening at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts will be on July 5, as we proudly present the exceptional noir-ish rarity Une si jolie petite plage (Such a Pretty Little Beach/Riptide). Yves Allégret's work is unjustifiably little-known in America, yet the director can be seen as a clear bridge between the pre-war Gallic filmmakers and the celebrated nouvelle vague. Such a Pretty Little Beach is a masterpiece of crime cinema, full of atmospheric tension, terror and tribulation.

GreenCine Presents And Hope to Die at the Yerba Buena Center

GreenCine's next screening at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts will be on Wednesday, June 7 as we proudly present René Clément's And Hope to Die. In one of his final roles, Robert Ryan stars as an aging criminal trying to collect on a kidnapping plot in Montreal. Jean-Louis Trintignant, Aldo Ray and an uncredited Emmanuelle Béart (in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it role) round out a remarkable cast, photographed by Edmond Richard (Welles' The Trial; Bunuel's Le Fantôme de la liberté). Legendary French auteur René Clément crafts David Goodis' "Black Friday" into a gritty, witty, unjustly little-seen neo-noir. The program includes the exceptionally rare short film The Reason Why, also starring Ryan as a conflicted man with a gun in his hand.

Wednesday, June 7, 7:30pm. YBCA, 701 Mission Street, San Francisco. $7/$5 GreenCine and YBCA Members, Students, Seniors.

GreenCine Sponsors Opening Night Film at Seattle Arab and Iranian Film Festival

Iraq in Fragments, winner of three Sundance awards, makes its West Coast premiere at seventh annual festival; GreenCine strengthens its commitment to promoting the best films and filmmakers

San Francisco, CA – March 31, 2006 – GreenCine (www.greencine.com), where film addicts get their fix, has announced that it is sponsoring Iraq in Fragments, the opening night film at the seventh annual Seattle Arab and Iranian Film Festival (SAIFF). The sponsorship is GreenCine’s latest endeavor in a year of involvement with the documentary.

"GreenCine has shown tremendous support for the foreign and documentary film communities and an unmatched ability to connect independent films with larger audiences," said James Longley, acclaimed director of Iraq in Fragments and Gaza Strip (2002). "Iraq in Fragments has been perceived as a war documentary and a controversial film but neither of those assertions is true. The film showcases the depth and complexity of one of the most unique countries in the world and is a reminder of the human stories that are often overshadowed by other elements. I’m happy to have partners like GreenCine and the Seattle Arab and Iranian Film Festival to spread these important messages to as many people as possible."

GreenCine’s year-long involvement with Iraq in Fragments exemplifies its position as the only movie vendor capable of following the entire life-cycle of a film. After seeing a rough cut of Iraq in Fragments in May of 2005, GreenCine began touting the importance of the film on its blog, GreenCine Daily. Two feature length interviews followed: an interview with the film’s co-producer and CEO of Arab Film Distribution, John Sinno in December of 2005, and an interview with director James Longley at Sundance in January. By building relationships with filmmakers, covering film festivals and writing about films from their fundraising stages to their release on DVD or Video-on-Demand (VOD), GreenCine is able to strengthen the bonds that people form with their favorite movies.

GreenCine’s relationship with Longley predates Iraq in Fragments, as GreenCine’s VOD service became the first and only vendor to offer Longley’s first film, Gaza Strip, in November of 2004.

"It’s our belief that the more you know about a particular film, the more complete your overall viewing experience," said Jonathan Marlow, director of content acquisitions at GreenCine. "Connecting with films from their nascent stages onward allows GreenCine the ability to constantly promote movies that we believe in and enables our customers to make more informed choices."

    About Iraq in Fragments

Iraq in Fragments illuminates post-war Iraq in three acts, building a vivid picture of a country pulled in different directions by the forces of foreign occupation, religion and ethnicity. Filmed in cinema verité style, the film powerfully explores the lives of ordinary Iraqis: people whose thoughts, beliefs, aspirations, and concerns are at once personal and illustrative of larger issues in Iraq today.

Iraq in Fragments premiered at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival where it was nominated for the Grand Jury prize and won three awards: Best Documentary Directing, Best Documentary Cinematography, and Best Documentary Editing -- the first time the documentary editing award was presented at Sundance. Iraq in Fragments has also been awarded the prize for best documentary at the Cleveland International Film Festival and the FIPRESCI International Critics award at the 8th annual Thessaloniki Documentary Festival in Greece.
