GreenCine Live Blogs the Oscars (Updated!)
Greetings and salutations,
With the writer's strike now officially over, as we all breathed a big sigh of relief and joy, we
also celebrated the fact that the 80th Academy Awards® ceremony will go on in its usual splashy fashion.
And GreenCine will be there (virtually) next Sunday, February 24th, to cover it in a cheeky Live Blogging event. Thanks to the folks at Cover It Live, GreenCine will host an online commentary throughout the Academy Awards ceremony, moderated by GC editor Craig Phillips, and an army of film bloggers including Erin Donovan (Steady Diet of Film), Agnes Varnum (Doc It Out), Stacie Ponder (Final Girl), Vince Keenan, and numerous other witty cinephiles. Special guests include... you! And a host of other goofballs from all over the world along for the ride.
Update! We are pleased to announce that Karie Bible, of Los Angeles' Film Radar (which covers revival, repertory, and special film events and the venues which house them), will also be joining us for the live chat.
Where: Online at http://www.greencine.com/static/oscarliveblog.jsp (you can register there for an e-mail reminder)
When: Sunday, February 24. Virtual seating begins at 4:45pm PST/7:45pm EST
We take film seriously so we'll be taking the awards seriously - but only up to a point; if you
can't make snarky comments at the Oscars, when can you?

GreenCine's editors and writers have years of experience writing about film online, via our award-
winning, ever-popular film blog GreenCine Daily, with our oft-quoted primers and interviews, and in our numerous DVD reviews. Together, we've helped put together one of the premier sites for film lovers everywhere, and with our highly-regarded DVD rent-by-mail service, GreenCine.com has become a place for cinephiles to get their hands on an incredible array of films, new and old, international and American, all the while being part of a fabulous film community.
Our Live Blogging of the Oscars continues that tradition while adding the excitement and immediacy of a live event.
Our commentary. Your comments. Trivia questions. Polls, pictures and punditry. All this and it's
free. Jump in, jump out, jump back in again when you just can't believe Daniel Day Lewis actually
said *that.*
The Oscars are fun, but let's face it, they need friends around to add running commentary.
Consider us your virtual friends for the evening, tux and gown optional. We'll also be giving away an Oscar-nominated film on DVD as well as a free one month GreenCine membership, so tell your friends!

This award-winning debut is an exceptional exploration of unusual human behavior. The film opens with the mysterious disappearance of Donald Turnupseed (Will Oldham) but this odd occurrence merely serves as a catalyst for a number of delightful digressions and reflections (including an appearance from Billy Nayer Show's Cory McAbee). This is the San Francisco premiere and currently the only SF screening slated, so don't miss it!

Baron Karl Friedrich von Münchhausen served in the Russian military and was involved in several battles, most notably against the Ottoman Empire, until he retired in 1750. On his return to his hometown of Bodenwerder, he told tales of visits to the Moon and flights across the battlefield atop a cannonball. While there have been many stories and illustrations about his legendary life, Czech filmmaker Karel Zeman mixed animation and live-action to create this exceptional little-seen film version of these fantastic tales. Not available on home video here in the U.S., this is your only chance to catch this most delightful film.

GreenCine Presents: Interkosmos at the YBCA, 8/2

Tonight!
The next GreenCine-sponsored screening at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts will be on Wednesday, August 2, as we proudly present the San Francisco premiere of Interkosmos (2006, 71 min., 16mm, in English and German with English subtitles). In the 1970s, the East Germans had a secret plan to establish Communist colonies on the moons of Saturn and Jupiter. These fabricated details are the grist for writer/director Jim Finn's first feature, an exceptional pseudo-documentary that chronicles the cosmonaut era from an alternate universe replete with musical numbers and faithful reconstructions of the rigors of space travel.

Our next screening at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts will be on July 5, as we proudly present the exceptional noir-ish rarity Une si jolie petite plage (Such a Pretty Little Beach/Riptide). Yves Allégret's work is unjustifiably little-known in America, yet the director can be seen as a clear bridge between the pre-war Gallic filmmakers and the celebrated nouvelle vague. Such a Pretty Little Beach is a masterpiece of crime cinema, full of atmospheric tension, terror and tribulation.

GreenCine Presents And Hope to Die at the Yerba Buena Center
GreenCine's next screening at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts will be on Wednesday, June 7 as we proudly present René Clément's And Hope to Die. In one of his final roles, Robert Ryan stars as an aging criminal trying to collect on a kidnapping plot in Montreal. Jean-Louis Trintignant, Aldo Ray and an uncredited Emmanuelle Béart (in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it role) round out a remarkable cast, photographed by Edmond Richard (Welles' The Trial; Bunuel's Le Fantôme de la liberté). Legendary French auteur René Clément crafts David Goodis' "Black Friday" into a gritty, witty, unjustly little-seen neo-noir. The program includes the exceptionally rare short film The Reason Why, also starring Ryan as a conflicted man with a gun in his hand.

GreenCine Sponsors Opening Night Film at Seattle Arab and Iranian Film Festival
Iraq in Fragments, winner of three Sundance awards, makes its West Coast premiere at seventh annual festival; GreenCine strengthens its commitment to promoting the best films and filmmakers
San Francisco, CA – March 31, 2006 – GreenCine (www.greencine.com), where film addicts get their fix, has announced that it is sponsoring Iraq in Fragments, the opening night film at the seventh annual Seattle Arab and Iranian Film Festival (SAIFF). The sponsorship is GreenCine’s latest endeavor in a year of involvement with the documentary.

"GreenCine has shown tremendous support for the foreign and documentary film communities and an unmatched ability to connect independent films with larger audiences," said James Longley, acclaimed director of Iraq in Fragments and Gaza Strip (2002). "Iraq in Fragments has been perceived as a war documentary and a controversial film but neither of those assertions is true. The film showcases the depth and complexity of one of the most unique countries in the world and is a reminder of the human stories that are often overshadowed by other elements. I’m happy to have partners like GreenCine and the Seattle Arab and Iranian Film Festival to spread these important messages to as many people as possible."
GreenCine’s year-long involvement with Iraq in Fragments exemplifies its position as the only movie vendor capable of following the entire life-cycle of a film. After seeing a rough cut of Iraq in Fragments in May of 2005, GreenCine began touting the importance of the film on its blog, GreenCine Daily. Two feature length interviews followed: an interview with the film’s co-producer and CEO of Arab Film Distribution, John Sinno in December of 2005, and an interview with director James Longley at Sundance in January. By building relationships with filmmakers, covering film festivals and writing about films from their fundraising stages to their release on DVD or Video-on-Demand (VOD), GreenCine is able to strengthen the bonds that people form with their favorite movies.
GreenCine’s relationship with Longley predates Iraq in Fragments, as GreenCine’s VOD service became the first and only vendor to offer Longley’s first film, Gaza Strip, in November of 2004.
"It’s our belief that the more you know about a particular film, the more complete your overall viewing experience," said Jonathan Marlow, director of content acquisitions at GreenCine. "Connecting with films from their nascent stages onward allows GreenCine the ability to constantly promote movies that we believe in and enables our customers to make more informed choices."
About Iraq in Fragments
Iraq in Fragments illuminates post-war Iraq in three acts, building a vivid picture of a country pulled in different directions by the forces of foreign occupation, religion and ethnicity. Filmed in cinema verité style, the film powerfully explores the lives of ordinary Iraqis: people whose thoughts, beliefs, aspirations, and concerns are at once personal and illustrative of larger issues in Iraq today.
Iraq in Fragments premiered at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival where it was nominated for the Grand Jury prize and won three awards: Best Documentary Directing, Best Documentary Cinematography, and Best Documentary Editing -- the first time the documentary editing award was presented at Sundance. Iraq in Fragments has also been awarded the prize for best documentary at the Cleveland International Film Festival and the FIPRESCI International Critics award at the 8th annual Thessaloniki Documentary Festival in Greece.
