GreenCine Live Blogs the Oscars (Updated!)

Greetings and salutations,

With the writer's strike now officially over, as we all breathed a big sigh of relief and joy, we
also celebrated the fact that the 80th Academy Awards® ceremony will go on in its usual splashy fashion.

And GreenCine will be there (virtually) next Sunday, February 24th, to cover it in a cheeky Live Blogging event. Thanks to the folks at Cover It Live, GreenCine will host an online commentary throughout the Academy Awards ceremony, moderated by GC editor Craig Phillips, and an army of film bloggers including Erin Donovan (Steady Diet of Film), Agnes Varnum (Doc It Out), Stacie Ponder (Final Girl), Vince Keenan, and numerous other witty cinephiles. Special guests include... you! And a host of other goofballs from all over the world along for the ride.

Update! We are pleased to announce that Karie Bible, of Los Angeles' Film Radar (which covers revival, repertory, and special film events and the venues which house them), will also be joining us for the live chat.

When: Sunday, February 24. Virtual seating begins at 4:45pm PST/7:45pm EST

We take film seriously so we'll be taking the awards seriously - but only up to a point; if you
can't make snarky comments at the Oscars, when can you?

OscarStatue_325.jpg

GreenCine's editors and writers have years of experience writing about film online, via our award-
winning, ever-popular film blog GreenCine Daily, with our oft-quoted primers and interviews, and in our numerous DVD reviews. Together, we've helped put together one of the premier sites for film lovers everywhere, and with our highly-regarded DVD rent-by-mail service, GreenCine.com has become a place for cinephiles to get their hands on an incredible array of films, new and old, international and American, all the while being part of a fabulous film community.

Our Live Blogging of the Oscars continues that tradition while adding the excitement and immediacy of a live event.

Our commentary. Your comments. Trivia questions. Polls, pictures and punditry. All this and it's
free. Jump in, jump out, jump back in again when you just can't believe Daniel Day Lewis actually
said *that.*

The Oscars are fun, but let's face it, they need friends around to add running commentary.
Consider us your virtual friends for the evening, tux and gown optional. We'll also be giving away an Oscar-nominated film on DVD as well as a free one month GreenCine membership, so tell your friends!

GreenCine.com Debuts Quick Returns for DVD Rental Customers

Leading Online DVD Rental Service Unveils new Quick Returns Feature to Help Members Expedite Turnaround Times

GreenCine (www.greencine.com), the number one online resource for film buffs, has announced that has just made renting films on its site faster and easier with the launch of a new Quick Returns application. This new solution means GreenCine members can notify the site that a disc has been sent back to GreenCine rather than waiting for the postal service to deliver it. Upon notifying GreenCine via Quick Returns, a member will have the next available disc in their queue shipped to them.

qrscreen.jpg

"This new feature will further expedite the process of renting by mail, giving our members another option to choose from," said GreenCine's Phillips. “Quick Returns guarantees GreenCine’s goal of 1-2 day maximum shipping, and allows us to give members another option over the USPS.”

The new GreenCine.com Quick Returns application is a simple-to-use link that sits atop each GreenCine member’s rental queue, next to DVDs that they currently have checked out. By signaling GreenCine that a title has been sent back, GreenCine shipping staff will release the next available title in their queue.

GreenCine offers plans ranging from 1 DVD checked out a time to 8 out at a time, to satisfy everyone from the casual, occasional viewer to the hardcore movie addict. “With the new Quick Returns feature now implemented, GreenCine can now more readily please all levels of service, allowing members to focus more on what’s next in their queue rather than checking the status of their last one,” adds Phillips. “We’re sure our members are going to be tickled by this feature.”

presentation begins at 6:30 p.m.

A letter to GreenCine members.

Herewith, a letter from Team GreenCine to our members about some of the changes we have in the works, and more information about what's been going on behind the scenes over the past week or so. Thanks for reading it!

Dear GreenCine Member,

You know, hindsight's 20-20, and while we were so excited about the changes a-foot at GreenCine we didn't anticipate there would be the number of glitches and delays in the system that occurred over the past week. We don't just have egg on our face, we have a whole Greek omelet. While we can assure you that there are definitely good changes afoot, we realize that doesn't make up for the fact that some of you experienced some real frustrations both with shipping and communication and for that we profusely apologize. (For those of you who didn't experience any problems, well, just ignore this part of the letter. Move it along here, nothing here to see, move it along.)

Also, as part of our new e-manifesto, we'll be focusing back on the thing we've been doing well all along: DVD rentals. So, for the foreseeable future, our site will be all rentals, all the time. We appreciate the patronage we had from everyone who purchased DVDs through our new DVD store. We may bring back this feature in the future, but for now our focus will be back on rental, which is what the majority of our customers have told us they're most interested in.

More things to expect from us soon:

We're bringing back contests, giving away DVDs and movie memorabilia; upgrades to the site (yes, you've heard this one before, but we mean it); pumping up our inventory, which means fulfilling more requests and getting more copies of our most popular titles; and new, smaller envelopes which will aid in greatly speeding up shipping times through the USPS.

Here are answers to some of the other questions you've had this past week:

Q: I've experienced some serious delays over past week, sometimes it looks like you're throttling [delays shipments on purpose] me. Are you making it a practice to throttle?

A: No. These delays were an unfortunate byproduct of the move and a subsequent breakdown or slowdown on the technology end. Without going into boring, awful details, suffice to say that on days where you experienced delays in shipping out after we checked in, we had every intention of getting you your discs out the same day. Things broke down. We broke down. There were some tears, a few group hugs. Excuses, excuses, but the upshot is that we absolutely promise this will not be a practice, and you should already be noticing same day shipping has returned.

Q: Given the recent hikes in USPS rates and these other changes, are you anticipating or planning any rate changes?

A: Not at this moment. However, no one can forsee the future and we don't want to pull a Bush Sr. and say "read my lips...no new taxes" and then come back to you guys with membership hikes. But the answer is that we do not plan on changing the rate any time soon.

Q: Will you still have your blogs - GreenCine Daily, Guru and so forth - your articles, primers, reviews, newsletters and all that editorial content?

A: Absolutely. Our mission is still the same - to introduce you to many films and filmmakers we love, to give you more information about film history and film's future, to personally recommend hidden gems, to survey new DVD releases each week, and to cover the world of film with a broad perspective. Our philosophy is still that movies matter.

Q: Can you give us a rough estimate as to how many distribution centers you will have and where they will be? Will you still have a center in San Francisco or in the SF Bay Area?

A: We've moved the distribution center to the Los Angeles area, but the style in which we'll be shipping, the Bay Area won't see any added shipping times (yes, this past week has been horribly bumpy once we changed over, as we said above, but we guarantee you that will be an anomaly). Plus, we'll be implementing something that hopefully will allow even quicker forms of returns.

Our plans are to add several more distribution centers, but the integration process for this takes some time, so please have patience. The efficiency of operations is orders of magnitude better than the previously existing GreenCine capabilities. This also gives us an East Coast shipping capability; GreenCine previously did not have this. GreenCine mail will no longer be hand-stamped but will run through pre-paid mail like the big guys do for maximum speed through the USPS.

Q: So why the expansion/relocation?

A: As much as editorial and management love the SF office, our shipping department was getting far too cramped, and our inventory took a hit because of it. Moving our inventory to a larger warehouse allows for better organization of inventory which means less disc lossage. It is easier and faster for them to process returns and pick new titles for shipping. More space and more money saved means room to broaden and deepen our selection of currently available titles.

We do however, still house our editorial, managing, and marketing staff in "The City." We'll still do events - screenings and co-sponsoring festivals - up here.

Also, a larger space and utilizing and expert shipping staff allows for many time savers that we couldn't have done in SF with our available crew. They sort by full zip codes, which allows for faster processing at the post office, and also saves us a little money too (which we can use to buy even more inventory!) So, yes Van Nuys is 300 miles away from SF. We expect shipping times to be one day more than expected this week but to stabilize very soon. Our goal for Bay Area customers is a two day turnaround.

Q: GreenCine's always had good, fast, personal customer service, but this past week it took longer to get a response. Are you shying away from focusing on good customer service?

A: Absolutely not. Our communications with our customers is very important to us. We take pride in responding personally and directly to members, as quick as possible. Again, we can assure you that the delays experienced over this past week are most definitely not the norm, and will make every effort to get back to you as fast as possible.

Q: What about the cardboard inserts - will you still use them?

A: Because we'll begin using smaller envelopes, we'll be going away from those inserts. While we love protecting our precious DVDs as much as possible, we have no doubt that switching to the new smaller envelopes will allow us to process our DVDs much, much faster. Basically, this will allow us to invest in more inventory. We'll still be doing everything we can to inspect and protect DVDs on our end. But your help will be appreciated as we track how well this works. We're pretty sure you'll let us know if it isn't working.

Q: What will you do if it turns out that the changes are not working out for your customers?

A: Fix whatever ails 'em and make everyone happy. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to write us at support@greencine.com.

Thank you again for your patience during what has been a rollercoaster week. We can't tell you enough how important both your patronage and your feedback have been to us as we experience growing pains. As Kermit the Frog once said, "It's not easy being Green" - but we're proud to still be a part of your world. At GreenCine, movies still matter, a lot.

Humbly yours,
Team GreenCine

GreenCine Announces Day-and-Date Release of 24 Hours on Craigslist

Becomes first vendor to simultaneously offer a film for purchase, Rent-by-Mail and On-Demand the same day the film is made available on DVD

San Francisco, CA April 25, 2006 GreenCine (www.greencine.com), where film addicts get their fix, has announced the signing of a groundbreaking licensing agreement with Zealot Pictures and Heretic Films to make 24 Hours on Craiglist available in three different formats simultaneously. Beginning today, GreenCine customers will have the option to purchase the film on DVD, rent the movie through GreenCines Rent-by-Mail service or download the film from GreenCines extensive Video-on-Demand library (VOD). This marks the first time in history that a vendor has been able to offer a feature film in all three formats the same day that the film is released on DVD.

This announcement marks a milestone for filmmakers, content owners and distributors as they now have three distinct, concurrent revenue streams for their films. An ideal format for independent and smaller films, GreenCines system fully maximizes the publicity created by the DVD release and pushes the film to larger audiences. While pure-play vendors are only able to reach one type of audience, GreenCine is able to attract and service all film enthusiasts, regardless of whether they prefer to buy, rent or download.

Day-and-Date is something that weve been contemplating for some time and this really seemed like the right film, right time and perfect company to launch with, said Michael Ferris Gibson, acclaimed director of 24 Hours on Craigslist and Numb. We chose to bring 24 Hours on Craigslist to market with GreenCine because we wanted a partner that understood the nuances of the film watching community and was positioned to reach all of them. This kind of release method represents the future of the industry and GreenCine is at the forefront of that revolution.

From a strategic and tactical standpoint, essentially everything weve done over the last two years has been leading up to this announcement, said Jonathan Marlow, GreenCines director of content acquisitions and business development. Our customers trust that we will always champion and promote the best available films and we trust our audience to keep us informed of their likes and dislikes of the films that we acquire. Our belief that this system is a natural evolution of film distribution is strengthened by the repeated requests for an array of viewing options from our customers.

While this is the first Day-and-Date release that GreenCine has offered its customers, its library contains thousands of titles that are available in all three formats. To purchase, rent or download 24 Hours on Craigslist or to learn more about GreenCines other offerings and services please visit: www.greencine.com.

GreenCine Sponsors Opening Night Film at Seattle Arab and Iranian Film Festival

Iraq in Fragments, winner of three Sundance awards, makes its West Coast premiere at seventh annual festival; GreenCine strengthens its commitment to promoting the best films and filmmakers

San Francisco, CA March 31, 2006 GreenCine (www.greencine.com), where film addicts get their fix, has announced that it is sponsoring Iraq in Fragments, the opening night film at the seventh annual Seattle Arab and Iranian Film Festival (SAIFF). The sponsorship is GreenCines latest endeavor in a year of involvement with the documentary.

"GreenCine has shown tremendous support for the foreign and documentary film communities and an unmatched ability to connect independent films with larger audiences," said James Longley, acclaimed director of Iraq in Fragments and Gaza Strip (2002). "Iraq in Fragments has been perceived as a war documentary and a controversial film but neither of those assertions is true. The film showcases the depth and complexity of one of the most unique countries in the world and is a reminder of the human stories that are often overshadowed by other elements. Im happy to have partners like GreenCine and the Seattle Arab and Iranian Film Festival to spread these important messages to as many people as possible."

GreenCines year-long involvement with Iraq in Fragments exemplifies its position as the only movie vendor capable of following the entire life-cycle of a film. After seeing a rough cut of Iraq in Fragments in May of 2005, GreenCine began touting the importance of the film on its blog, GreenCine Daily. Two feature length interviews followed: an interview with the films co-producer and CEO of Arab Film Distribution, John Sinno in December of 2005, and an interview with director James Longley at Sundance in January. By building relationships with filmmakers, covering film festivals and writing about films from their fundraising stages to their release on DVD or Video-on-Demand (VOD), GreenCine is able to strengthen the bonds that people form with their favorite movies.

GreenCines relationship with Longley predates Iraq in Fragments, as GreenCines VOD service became the first and only vendor to offer Longleys first film, Gaza Strip, in November of 2004.

"Its our belief that the more you know about a particular film, the more complete your overall viewing experience," said Jonathan Marlow, director of content acquisitions at GreenCine. "Connecting with films from their nascent stages onward allows GreenCine the ability to constantly promote movies that we believe in and enables our customers to make more informed choices."

About Iraq in Fragments

Iraq in Fragments illuminates post-war Iraq in three acts, building a vivid picture of a country pulled in different directions by the forces of foreign occupation, religion and ethnicity. Filmed in cinema verit style, the film powerfully explores the lives of ordinary Iraqis: people whose thoughts, beliefs, aspirations, and concerns are at once personal and illustrative of larger issues in Iraq today.

Iraq in Fragments premiered at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival where it was nominated for the Grand Jury prize and won three awards: Best Documentary Directing, Best Documentary Cinematography, and Best Documentary Editing -- the first time the documentary editing award was presented at Sundance. Iraq in Fragments has also been awarded the prize for best documentary at the Cleveland International Film Festival and the FIPRESCI International Critics award at the 8th annual Thessaloniki Documentary Festival in Greece.

GreenCine Broadens Service and Audience with Launch of New DVD Sales

Becomes first movie vendor to offer DVD sales, Rent-by-Mail and Video-on-Demand; now able to service all types of film lovers

San Francisco, CA March 20, 2006 GreenCine (www.greencine.com), where film addicts get their fix, has announced that it is adding sales of new DVDs to its industry leading Rent-by-Mail and Video-on-Demand (VOD) services. This marks the first time in history that a vendor has offered all three services from the same location. Until now, GreenCine has primarily been known for boasting the Internets largest library of independent, documentary and international films, including thousands of titles that cant be found through any other service. With the launch of this new service, GreenCine adds thousands of mainstream titles to its existing catalog, enabling it to service a wider base of film lovers. Open to members and non-members, the new DVD sales service pushes GreenCines library to more than 80,000 available films across over 250 genres.

We started GreenCine because we wanted to offer something that film fans had never had before, a comprehensive site that catered to different film appetites, created a sense of community among its members and served as a conduit for discovering new films, said Dennis Woo, co-founder and president of GreenCine. We started to gain a reputation throughout the film world as a trusted resource for news and interviews. There were tens of thousands of non-members visiting our site daily to read the articles and reviews and browse the discussion boards. By launching DVD sales we are meeting the expectations of our audience. Weve become the chief destination for informed film lovers, and can now offer them a range of services and array of films that is unmatched in the industry.

Specific highlights from GreenCines DVD sales service include:

Pricing and Selection
Drawing from one of the largest libraries of independent, documentary and international films in the world, GreenCine features competitive pricing on new releases, catalog titles and TV and movie box sets.

Free Priority Shipping for all orders over $50
While other online vendors provide a free shipping option, their offers usually take weeks for delivery. GreenCine will offer free USPS Priority Shipping for orders over $50, which usually delivers within days.

5 distribution centers for DVD Sales
GreenCine has 5 distribution centers, guaranteeing fast, reliable shipping to everywhere in the US.

Working with the belief that peoples favorite movies are stepping-stones to a bigger world of cinema, the GreenCine staff is committed to broadening movie tastes by personally recommending films and interviewing influential filmmakers. Regardless of the movies consumers are looking for when they find the site whether it be Sundance winners or mainstream hits the DVD sales service enables GreenCine to offer movies for its entire audience and the knowledge, expertise and content to help them find countless others.

Since its launch, GreenCine was largely perceived as a specialty shop catering only to independent film enthusiasts, said Jonathan Marlow, GreenCine's director of content acquisitions and business development. In reality, we've created a comprehensive site that allows any movie fan to expand their awareness and locate films of every sort. While most e-tailers merely supply access to movies familiar to the average customer, GreenCine provides a discovery engine for anyone to find those same titles while learning about remarkable films that they never knew existed. Our aim is to facilitate the entire process, from initial discovery to download, rental or sale.

While GreenCines DVD sales service does not require any form of membership or subscription to purchase, GreenCine members will be eligible for a series of benefits in the form of coupons and other promotions. To purchase DVDs or to learn more about the service and GreenCines other offerings, please visit: www.greencine.com.

GreenCine's Video-on-Demand Service Passes 10,000 Title Benchmark

Innovative Service Now Features More Titles Than CinemaNow, Movielink and Vongo Combined

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- GreenCine (www.greencine.com), the film addict's film site, today announced that its Video-on-Demand (VOD) library now contains over 10,000 titles. Featuring the industry's largest library of independent, international and documentary films, GreenCine's VOD collection includes a wide array of movies starting at less than $2 per rental.

GreenCine's VOD service, which first debuted in September 2003, has steadily grown through a series of partnerships, affiliations and acquisitions. Unlike its major competitors, the service does not have associations with or receive financial backing from any of the major studios. GreenCine has been able to attract independent filmmakers and distributors to its VOD service through its reputation as one of the Web's preeminent sources for filmmaker interviews, festival coverage and film discovery and debate. Recently profiled in The Wall Street Journal ("Consumers looking for foreign or independent films can turn to GreenCine ... "), GreenCine's VOD library contains an eclectic mixture of important and widely-sought titles from such pioneers as Hal Hartley, Andrzej Wajda and Caveh Zahedi.

"Video-on-Demand is the wave of the future. It's the easiest, most convenient and most environmentally-friendly way for people to watch films. GreenCine is in the vanguard of the VOD movement because of their dual commitment to thinking outside the box and promoting truly independent films," said Caveh Zahedi, acclaimed director of A Little Stiff, In the Bathtub of the World and I Don't Hate Las Vegas Anymore, all of which are available through GreenCine's VOD library, and whose I Am a Sex Addict opens in New York and San Francisco on April 5th. "I believe that GreenCine's method of combining DVD rentals and VOD downloads with editorial content and community will replace all current models. As a filmmaker and film enthusiast, I'm proud to be a part of the GreenCine community, and look forward to seeing what they'll come up with next."

"Much like individual film preferences, viewing habits are unique to every person. Not only is Video-on-Demand a convenient way to make the films on our site as accessible as possible, it also affords us the opportunity to showcase films that aren't available in any other format," said Jonathan Marlow, GreenCine's Director of Content Acquisition. "VOD is a perfect complement to our Rent-by-Mail business because it enables us to expand our total catalogue and furthers our mission of broadening the distribution opportunities for motion pictures."
